Blackwater River State Forest Fly-Out (8FD3)

April 30 @ 12:00 pm3:00 pm

We Be Flyin’s next big camping adventure will be on the weekend of April 30th through May 3rd. We will be flying to the Blackwater River State Forest airstrip (8FD3) (Krul Lake campground) near Milton, Florida in the Panhandle. Blackwater is one of our favorite camping destinations. We will be staying next to the Krul Lake campground. (½ mile east of Munson, north of Highway 4) Everyone is invited to come, whether you are flying in or bringing an RV, or travel trailer.
If you are driving in the address is 11650 Munson Highway, Milton, Florida 32570. RV and TT campers wishing to stay in the campground can get more information and make reservations by calling 877-879-3859. There is a small store and restaurant just a half mile from the campground where you can pick up snacks, drinks, fishing tackle and get some great biscuits and gravy for breakfast if you so choose.
The airstrip is adjacent to the campground where you can park your travel trailer or RV. Hot showers and clean rest rooms are available at the campground and are just a 5 minute walk from the airstrip where fly in campers will be tent camping. For fly in campers, there is a $10.00 per day overnight camping fee. Add $5.00 per day if you plan on making use of the campground showers. Fees will be collected during your stay.
The airstrip (18/36) is 5000 feet of well manicured grass. We will be parking and camping on the west side of the South end of the strip. Monitor 122.9 when maneuvering in the area. Runway 18 is right traffic. Runway 36 is left traffic pattern. Avoid flying over the campground and swimming lake.
We plan to arrive starting Thursday afternoon and staying through Sunday morning. We will be bringing a generator, cook stoves, tables and a shade canopy. Landing and airplane camping is by permit only. If you plan to attend by air, please contact Hal Peters at halpeters@yahoo.com so that he can include your information on the group permit. Drive in campers will be responsible for making their own reservations by calling 877-879-3859 Hal will also be handing out “to bring” lists to everyone in order that we don’t have a lot of duplicates of food and supplies to fly back home with. (extra cookies and brownies are OK) Master Chef Hal will be planning the meals for the group, so let him know what you like to eat.
Fuel is available at DeFuniak Springs (54J) approximately 50 miles East or Peter Prince(2R4), 10 miles south.
Activities at the airstrip/campground include hiking, exploring, bird-watching and swimming in a spring fed lake next to the campground. If you are up early enough, many times you can observe deer, fox, coyotes and other wildlife on the airstrip. We plan to take a canoe trip down the Blackwater river on Friday. If you would like to join us, let Hal (halpeters@yahoo.com) know so that he can reserve enough canoes for everybody. The river flows at 2 or 3 mph, so there is very little paddling or strenuous work. The canoe trip is very relaxing and provides a great opportunity to get next to nature and possibly see some wildlife. There are many places to stop along the way and go into the forest to explore. (or pee)
There is a fire ring right next to our camping area that we can use to ward off the chill of the North Florida evenings. Picnic tables and charcoal grilles are also available.
We don’t have anything in particular planned yet for Saturday so it’ll probably be a day of hanging around the camp sight and maybe some local sightseeing flights. There might even be some airplane rides available for those who drive in. Kids, both young and adult are welcome.
We Be Flyin’ is a sociable group of like-minded aviation, camping and eating enthusiasts. Everyone, whether they fly or not is invited to join us in our activities. There are no membership fees, no special “club” rules, no politics and no club meetings. Our goal is just to have fun, meet new people enjoy each other’s company and eat good food when we get hungry. If you are unfamiliar with We Be Flyin’ or would like to know more about us and our exploits, go to our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/We-be-Flyin-560325894351557/.
